From Wilkes-Barre Pa United Press reports seven men killed and five seriously injured in a gas explosion at the Conyngham shaft of the Hudson Coal Company. Rescue teams worked to reach victims as injured were rushed to hospital and families gathered outside. Names of the identified dead include Morris Ryan Manuel Gallagher Louis Olson and other Wilkes-Barre workers. Rescue operations continued with officials confirming seven fatalities.
In Innsbruck Austria May 25 a student riot denounced Italy. Police arrested twenty two after clashes near the Malian consulate flag raising, with baton charges and assaults reported. An Italian flag torn down spurred demonstrations around the German stadium and railway workers joined in later actions.
Widow Busty Lekouky of Mather Pennsylvania, bereaved by the weekend mine explosion, reported the theft of her life savings amounting to 240 dollars. Police investigated the alleged robbery and charged an unnamed suspect with larceny.

A Pittsburgh woman and her mother were injured when their Packard sedan veered off the highway near Union City while en route to Erie. The two-year-old son escaped unhurt. Mrs. Rankin suffered a possible skull fracture and severe leg lacerations. Mrs. McCullough had a scalp wound and rib fracture. Both were hospitalized. doctors reported some improvement and expected recovery.
Washington May 25 Wing McNary of the Senate agriculture committee announced plans to seek a vote to override President Coolidge on the McNary Muggen farm price bill. McNary had previously said action would be futile but farm bloc members persuaded him to go ahead.
The Senate adopted the conference report on the tax reduction bill authorizing a 223.405 million dollar cut. It killed a publicity amendment that would have publicized tax returns. the amendment failed 57 to 23. The House is expected to pass the conference report for President Coolidge to sign.
The seventh annual distribution of Buddy Poppies will be held in the city Saturday by Lieut. A. W. Thompson Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary. Poppies are sold throughout the day to benefit veterans in government hospitals and convalescent wards.
The Junior High School releases its annual thirty two page booklet featuring eleven halftone photographs and work from the Junior Scoop staff. The edition covers school life and is a promotion class project gifted for printing and engraving by the Busning Journal. Fatally injured railroad worker Hutchinson dies in Pittsburgh yards after being struck near a locomotive.

J L Newhouse Company acquires the Brownell Shoe Company property on Center Street from HLH Keppel. The Brownell Shoe Company will remain in the block while Newhouse plans extensive upper floor offices and apartments plus early remodeling of the block.
The Junior class presents Kempy at the High School Auditorium tonight and again Saturday evening. Cast members have trained for weeks and promise one of the best productions from the school in recent years.
Lieut. Stanley B. Umstead, U.S. Army, leaped to safety from a Curtiss 885 aircraft fire at 2,500 feet. He escaped with minor burns to hands and face as his parachute saved him during the dramatic descent. His mustache was singed in the blaze.
Four Democratic Senators McKellar Tydings King and Blease abandoned a Senate filibuster late at night on the Muscle Shoals conference report. The Norris report was adopted and sent to President Coolidge, with the House already voting 211 to 116 to approve. Curtis and Chalice expressed cautious views on final action and veto prospects.

The Corry Dairymen’s League gathered Thursday evening May 24 in the VFW hall for a well attended business meeting led by President Boyd Spencer. Frank Harvey was elected delegate to the Rochester annual meeting and sub district. Harry Hiis named alternate delegate.
