Fraud Includes JFK Ike Aides In Grain Storage Affair

The Agriculture Department announced it will pull about 42 million bushels of government grain from storage in facilities tied to Estes. The government paid roughly $4 million annually to store the grain, a blow to creditors who hoped government payments would satisfy Estes claims. The impact on Commercial Solvents Corp of New York, tied to Estes, remains to be seen as details unfold.

Work Delays Hamper Erie County Hospital Renovations

Persistent delays in hospital equipment deliveries and stalled renovations by the Robinson and Gray architectural firm have left about 100 beds out of service. Hospital Superintendent A. O. Brueckman urged county commissioners to cancel the defective drape and chair supply contract and warned the Sept. 15 completion deadline is unlikely. A related note reports cartoonist John Striebel, creator of Dixie Dugan, died at 70 after a long illness. Capitol Hill hearings on the Estes storage contracts, valued at 7 to 9 million since 1959, were announced by Rep. Fountain to uncover full facts.
