Two Continental Airlines crashes in Missouri and Illinois claim seven lives and leave a survivor. Authorities tie the Chicago to Los Angeles route wreck near Unionville to a violent storm or tornado. Three Pennsylvanians among 26 aboard a U S Navy Constellation killed near Edersburg Germany include Leo Strong 47 an aviation electronics technician third class from Philadelphia Lena Stroile 16 described her son as quiet and brave and Roland Waida 24 of Wilkes Barre also an aviation electronics technician Bartram 3rd class from York survived by family. The crash occurred during a routine navigational training flight over Bavaria triggering a large search and investigations by military authorities.
The Coty office of the Pennsylvania State Employment Service announced it is accepting applications for an eight week retraining program in Meadville. William Michael, local office manager, said both men and women may apply by contacting Tim at the North Center street office.
