An anonymous Army officer said by fall youths turning 18 may fill about 85 percent of draft calls. He cited Selective Service Director Hershey’s private view that 18-year-olds would account for only 45 percent of the July call for 90,000 men. The officer spoke with authority from his position.
Harrisburg May 23 In a note from the draft bureau deputy director Clarence M. Hivnan t states that induction of all registrants aged 30 or older was postponed. Telegrams went to the 422 local boards instructing them to defer calls and review cases for possible deferments based on occupation. The plan aims to ease future pressures as 18 year old numbers rise and Navy enlistments draw away youths. An indefinite deferment was announced for men 30 and over who remain in useful work.
Health board meets after city council session and issues three orders. A dilapidated barn at 312 Delaware Street must be repaired or removed by June 18 due to menace. Washington May 23 Japan balloons drifted toward the United States in a new wave of attacks. The Army and Navy reported no property damage or military threat as the unanchored balloons likely originate from submarines or the Japanese homeland. Approximately 23 feet in diameter, the gray and green balloons cannot be steered and present only a remote chance of striking any particular location.
State police raided the Culbertson Hills Country Club at Edinboro and the Edinboro Restaurant, seizing a total of 10 slot machines. Proprites were arrested on gambling device charges. Albert Engh, club steward, and Joseph Douglas, restaurant proprietor, were released on their own recognizance with hearings set for 3 p.m. before Alderman William Y. Heiser.
A government survey reports likely shortages in milk butter and eggs for fall and winter. Civilians face limited meat as supplies lag, with overall civilian diet dipping toward wartime lows by August.
