In a local notice a meeting is planned at Erie to discuss church mission work led by J. Hol and others. The text references a Monday event around 40 o clock and mentions support for missionary efforts and related community plans.
Six persons were injured, none seriously, when two automobiles collided on the curve at the top of Proctor Hill between Corry and Union City about 11 45 o clock Wednesday night. State police continued investigation and may file charges against a Union City driver. Vehicles involved included a Plymouth sedan driven by James Sinare and a car driven by Lester Danner with occupants Lyle Chase Tony Chesney Jack Lyns and Miss Evelyn Brigham. Brigham was taken to Corry hospital in a car driven by Rev B I Warner returning from Erie. Continued to pare two.
Erie Pa May 23 United Lutheran churches Pittsburg synod faced factional conflict over a resolution condemning war and defending bearing arms for self defense. After heated debate the synod ordered seven regional conferences to review the measure this fall, with dates set in Martins Ferry Erie Warren East Manorville West Zelienople Verona Greensburg.
Ta McClaskey, chearnels, named director of corrections in the department of welfare succeeding Dr. Scott Clearfield man from Upper Darby, who was dismissed recently. The post pays 85,000 dollars annually. Dr Scott is a former resident of his city.
A bill in Harrisburg by Senator Joseph R. Ziesenheim would let the state pay grade school teachers salaries and cut local school tax by about four mills, benefiting Coity by roughly $29,000. School officials show interest as the measure awaits outcome.
Police today blamed a man for the murder of 22 year old Mrs Maris Tobin whose naked body was found in a flaming bed. She had been stabbed near the right temple with an ice pick and badly beaten. Firemen subdued the blaze and found her dog killed under one arm. Coroner J Henshaw noted a broken jaw and missing teeth but could not determine whether these wounds caused death. Nine others were questioned and released while one suspect remained in custody.
Roy G. Miller of Harrisburg and Dr. B. K. Tingley of Marietta, former state health staffer and Gilliland Laboratories head, were indicted for conspiracy to distribute impotent diphtheria antitoxin. They posted bail of 500 dollars and await possible trial pending grand jury action.
May 23 The city of Pittsburgh won its appeal to overturn a 2259 dollar verdict awarded to George P. Stephens and his wife for the death of their son George Jr. killed by a stray bullet in a city park. The appellate majority ruled the shooter’s line of fire and causal links were not established.
Six crew members of an Martin seaplane died when their craft sank 40 miles south of Midway during Pacific fleet maneuvers. Debris and a wing tip were found but no bodies. search continued as the main fleet resumed its course.
Two youths from Oil City and Franklin fled home to join Downe Bros circus. Mia Blanche Sweetapple aged 15 was found at the circus by Chief Burlingame and held overnight while relatives prepared to take her home. Timer Hamilton also ran away and was detained by police pending his parents' arrival.
The Senate sustained President Roosevelt's veto 40 to 54 and killed the Patman bonus bill. Despite strong public support and a late push for alternatives, the two-thirds override failed, ending the measure for this session.
Erie officers arrested local residents accused of obtaining relief fraudulently. Four Corry relief chisellers face imminent arrest, with bail set at 300 dollars or jail until the September criminal term. Hundreds of pickets gathered at the Industrial Rayon Corporation plant defying court injunctions restraining interference with operations. Deputy sheriffs attempted to serve copies of the orders as negotiations with the Rayon Workers' Union continued. Seventy five loyal workers remained inside the plant, while the supply of 49d dwindled and reports of violence circulated.
Eugene McAuliffe, Omaha coal dealer, warned before the Ways and Means Committee that a two year NRA extension is needed to avoid a civil war in the bituminous coal industry. He said a nine month extension is inadequate and could kill the NRA, making coal sales contracts impossible until NEA fate is known.
Col Alexander Williams of the Army Quartermaster Corps was found guilty on two counts by a court martial and sentenced to dismissal. He was accused of soliciting and obtaining a 2500 loan from a tire company seeking War Department contracts in 1933 while serving as Brigadier General in charge of transportation. He was acquitted on one count of receiving another sum.
An Air Lines flight from Omaha to Chicago at 12 10 pm carried two agents guarding a prisoner in pajamas. Rumor says the prisoner is Alvin Karpis, one of the Southwest’s most wanted criminals, with conflicting reports that he was captured at Boise.
