United Press report details the House vote of 312 to 98 to override President Roosevelts veto of the Patman bonus bill. It notes initial House approval last month and places focus on Senate prospects, with party leaders predicting a tight minority to sustain the veto or fail to reach two thirds.
President Roosevelt denounces the 2.2 billion Patman bonus as disastrous and vetoes the measure in a historic personal appearance before a joint session of Congress. He warns it would spur inflation, burden the nation’s credit, and favor special groups over broader veterans’ aid.
Harrisburg May 22 The House approved two revenue bills a 2 cent levy on checks and a 1 cent gasoline tax to fund unemployment relief and general funds for 1935 37. The taxes would raise about 11 million and 4 million annually respectively as part of a 60 million program. The eight other bills were sent to the Senate with party line votes. The 7 percent fuel tax bill also passed and was sent over. Democratic leaders rallied the party behind the measures.
Columbus May 22 Governor Martin L Davey withdrew his warrant charging Federal Relief Administrator Harry L Hopkins with criminal bet The governor announced the withdrawal of the warrant filed in Newark on March 18 saying all objectives had been accomplished and no good purpose can be served by continuing the warfare
Harrisburg May 22 The Woodward Howell party raider bill was reported from the house elections committee. It will be on the first reading calendar next week. The senate passed it May 19 by 38 to 8, restricting candidates for judicial honors to single ticket nominations.
Legislation pending in Harrisburg would pay grade school teachers salaries totaling 38 million dollars, relieving Corry's budget by about 12 600 dollars and reducing the 2935 36 millage by around 2 mills. If enacted the tax cut would need offsetting state or other funds.
Harrisburg May 22 Intoxicating liquor may be sold to members of the Pennsylvania National Guard this summer while in training at Indiantown Gap and Mt Gretna reservations if the liquor board amends orders. Attorney General Margiotti holds federal law does not apply to the two state reservations but liquor board ruling bars sales to uniformed guardsmen. Miss Florence Fly guest of Miss Dorothy Kittleberger, returned to Titusville.
Berlin reports that Adolf Hitler addressed European statesmen outlining a plan to limit arms, join non aggression pacts, and strengthen a new peace framework. He called for absolute German equality in armaments, a role in future disarmament talks, fair treatment of Germans outside Germany and a reformed League of Nations. The speech framed steps to isolate aggressors and support a revised peace order.
May 22 in Harrisburg the administration constitutional revision bill won full Senate consideration after Republicans blocked Democratic amendments. A lone approval cut the appropriation from 1 million to 350 thousand. Sen. Harvey Huffman sought to lift a 50 million borrowing cap and switch from senatorial to congressional districts for convention delegates, but both efforts were rejected.
In Cleveland on May 22 militane pickets surrounded the Industrial Rayon Corporation plant to press for higher wages seniority rights and abolition of labor-saving machinery. Augmented police patrolled after violence including an attacked newspaper photographer and a beaten reporter.

At Indianapolis motor speedway on May 21 three racers died during crashes in qualifying for the 28th annual Memorial Day 500 Mile race. The victims were Wil Stubblefield of Southgate California Leo Whittaker of Los Angeles and Johnny Hannon of Norritown Pennsylvania. The day after the accidents qualifying trials were to resume.
Temperatures plunged below freezing last night with the heaviest frost of the season. Farmers fear damage to trees, flowers, and early wraps though full extent will take days to confirm. Some trees on Carter Hill showed color changes but owners report no serious harm. Meadows and maples also suffered, ground coated in white frost amid uncertain losses.
Ford Motor Company today returns to a six dollar daily minimum, restoring the pre-depression wage level for about 120,000 Ford and Lincoln plants workers. Wages above the minimum rise by five cents and more, with overall payroll up significantly.
Carter Hill farmers report a large police dog killed by a rifle near the Ora Gibbons farm after a raid that killed five sheep. Steve Linsky, of Carter Hill, owned the dog suspected in previous raids. State agent Charles Cook investigated. damages to Gibbons farm estimated at about 50 dollars.
About thirty thousand school children in Corry and the county will salute the American flag Wednesday morning May 28 before school. The ceremony, started by Can ies post American Legion Lawrence Park and supported by other posts, aims to instill patriotism and respect for the national emblem. Arthur Schaub, Americanism chairman of Elmer Carrier post, oversees plans for the event. The salute will last no more than a minute.
The condition of Thomas F Connelly, Bradford man, under treatment at St Alexis Hospital in Cleveland today was reported as fair. Hospital staff would not reveal the nature of the operation, but said he had not undergone it.
