Roof Caves During Collapse at City Store
About 50 customers mostly women and children and 18 employees were in the store when the roof collapsed. Police and fire officials feared a burial under rubble, but rescuers searched through the night aided by flood lights. Two firemen suffered minor injuries from a falling girder. Harold Birns ordered inspectors to probe and a district attorney promised an investigation. The two story building may have limited damage as debris was cushioned by the store ceiling. The roof was being waterproofed and a small intact section remained. The building had been converted from a movie theater 12 years earlier with offices on the second floor.
