More than 501 delegates were registered as Miss Helen Schiuraff, former president, led the opening session at 10 am. United Press reports Anthony Mezniaki, a student at Allegheny Vocational School, was arrested in Pittsburgh on May 18 for an extortion plot against merchant Tullud Goldberg and his family. He allegedly threatened bombings of homes and businesses and mailed threatening letters seeking $500.
The Dairymen's League subdistrict in Crawford and Erie counties held an annual get acquainted dinner at Hotel Corry with business and professional men. One hundred seven presided over a program of music and speeches, aiming to strengthen ties between farmers and business leaders while addressing dairy and farm issues and cooperative work.
A major fire in Clearfield Pennsylvania destroyed the Newling block in a busy shopping area. Estimated property damage reached $80,000 as firemen rescued residents from apartments above shops. Clyde Baker a 45 year old Warren township resident and rural mail carrier was struck by Pennsylvania Railroad Train No 8871 as it hit his light touring car near PN tower on the Warren outskirts. He died at General Hospital from a head wound and internal injuries after being dragged about ninety feet. Coroner Ed Lowrey will impanel a jury to conduct an inquest into the fatality. The train was operated by Engineer John Smith Fireman Walter Gardner and Conductor Hugh Honey, all of Brie.
A heavy storm drenched the city last night ending a three week drought and aiding farmers. Six landslides, three to ten feet deep, hit the Allegheny division of the Pennsylvania Railroad causing major delays including Train No 912 to Buffalo running over seven hours late. Railroad workers rushed to repair tracks and reroute trains via New Castle.
Pittsburgh May 18 Daniel J Shields of Johnstown Pa was convicted today in Federal court for the second time on conspiracy to violate the prohibition laws. A jury found Shields guilty after about two hours of deliberation.
May 18 United Press dispatch from Tokyo reports Chinese Nationalist forces advancing on Peking to seize the central government seat. Japan plans to guard its nationals in Tientsin and potentially establish a 20 mile neutral zone. Foreigners likely to be confined to legation quarters as Japan braces to protect Manchuria and northern border interests. Admiral Bristol sails to Pientsin to monitor the situation.
Pittsburg May 18 The coroner s inquest into the death of Philia P Clark shot and killed in the First Christian Church at Atun hall Pa ended abruptly when the jury recommended holding attorney Tyrrell on a murder charge awaiting grand jury action Fifty witnesses were listed but few were called Rev TD Waters pastor and Thompson church board chairman testified Thompson described a scene in the pastor s study preceding the shooting Tyrrell declared there would be no hearing this morning as he drew his revolver Tyrrell said I am going to get both Clark and Waters after the minister was shot and restrained
