Atomic Power May Be Closer Than We Think

Ohio Valley electric utilities foresee atomic power affecting the region within a decade with 50 percent of output potentially atomically powered. Hydrogen fusion may emerge as a future power source as 150,000 kilowatt plants are planned near Lapuna Beach, and Shippingport operates at 60,000 kilowatts. Coal remains a key transport and energy source, with costs around 1.9 mills per kilowatt hour, while atomic energy may supplement coal for years, spurring new industrial uses and chemical applications. The Ohio Valley could become an “atom valley” as research expands.
