Benjamin Orr a 93 year old Civil War veteran narrowly escaped being struck by train No. 581 at the Renovo division station. Quick action by Brook Burdurl saved him, injuring him lightly with a head wound. Orr is recovering at Corry Hospital with improved condition and plans to visit Spartansburg for his niece Misa Wiorente Stanbro's high school graduation. Orr, once a Spartansburg resident, had been staying with Miss Julia Koestner and at the European hotel.
The U S Supreme Court ruled that a state gasoline tax cannot be applied to gas sold to government agencies. The Mississippi case involved Pan Hands Company resisting tax on gasoline sold to the U S Coast Guard and the Veteran Bureau.
Sergt Clifford Clark of Spring Creek and Company A, Pennsylvania National Guard, departs for Philadelphia to begin an honor tour of France. About two hundred enlisted men and twelve officers prepare, passports arranged, culminating with sail on the George Washington to visit World War memorials honoring Pennsylvania soldiers and 28th Division veterans.

Misa Beulah Bauer a 20 year old senior from Warren Pa was crowned Queen of May at Thiel College in Quenville. She died in a hospital from blood poisoning that developed from a small facial infection. Bauer was named the most popular girl at the college recently.
Two fires occupied Corry firefighters over the weekend but caused little damage. A seven o clock Saturday blaze at 134 Second avenue damaged the upper level of a two story frame building, believed sparked by an abandoned chimney. A grass and brush fire on West Smith near Worth street threatened a nearby home but was extinguished with minor damage. Local residents including Mr and Mrs Paul Weber Miss Elizabeth Weber and Mr and Mrs G Fox attended Zeigfeld Bollesjm fire Saturday night.
Frank O Lowden of Illinois testified before the Senate campaign investigations committee denying any agreement to trade delegates with Vice President Dawes but stating they shared views on agriculture. He described campaign spending, noting Chicago headquarters received 47000 and about 60000 was spent to push his cause. His testimony added the known expenses of thirteen candidates brought to about 440184.
May 14 report from Peking says Northern general Tso-Lin seeks merger with Southern forces to unite China against external threat. Chiang Kai-shek in the South has not replied. Northern troops withdraw from fronts as talks continue, while Japanese hold Tsitsian city.

Weat Ridge Transportation Co. changes bus operations in Corry with a new timetable in effect yesterday. Five daily trips to Erie and Warren are listed. Buses will now station at the Hotel Corry on Park Place, avoiding delays at railroad crossings. Passengers may board for Warren, Pen, Brie, Tamestown, or intermediate stops.
Two large barns on the Mitchell farm between Spring Creek and East Branch were destroyed by fire this afternoon. The Second Ward truck and local firefighters responded around 3 o clock. Two calves perished and twenty two cattle were saved from the burning structures. Neighbors aided in saving the farm home and a larger barn, with damage costs not yet learned.
In St John s New Brunswick on May 14 one of two J S planes en route to Greenley Island took off for Pictou Nova Scotia under Captain Baker. Gen Fechet s plane expected to follow as weather clears. The Bremen relief mission looms with Lieut Fairchild taken ill and to be moved to hospital in Washington.
A resolution urging President Coolidge to use his power to avert potential war between China and Japan was introduced at the Methodist Episcopal General Conference in Kansas City. The measure was presented by Y. Lo of Shanghai, editor of the Chinese Christian Advocate.
Washington May 14. Treasury Secretary Mellon praised Herbert Hoover as closest to the standard for the next president, prompting belief of an open endorsement. Observers noted simultaneous praise of Coolidge suggesting a draft Coolidge effort, while others saw it aiding Hoover politically. Analysts predicted Hoover and Al Smith likely nominees next month.
Roumanian Prince Carol of Roumania to depart England before Thursday after government pressure for his political activity. He is kept under possible surveillance at Ionescu’s Surrey home as physicians report fellow traveler Garopowja cannot yet travel due to chills. Washington movis democratic leaders praised a tax cut package adding about 24 million to the bill totaling 239 million tax cuts. The House passed the measure with Senate amendments granting a graduated rate from ten to twelve percent for small corporations under 15 thousand dollars profit, while higher profits retain 12 to 14 percent. Chairman Smoot aims to reverse the graduated rate before final passage.
Corry and the nation paused to honor mothers with church services and special sermons. Flowers were exchanged as living mothers received pink or red carnations and white flowers paid tribute to deceased mothers.
