Marriages Down and Divorces Increase Across U S

Washington AP reports a Center for Health Statistics study showing marriages fell about 7 percent from 1973 to 1975, with an estimated 2.1 million marriages in 1975 versus 2.2 million in 1974 and 2.8 million in 1973. Experts attribute declines to population patterns and delayed marriages rather than a value shift, noting more selective partnering and later marriages. The divorce rate rose 4.6 percent from 1974 to 1975, with many divorces involving under-30 individuals.
