Rail Signalmen threaten nationwide strike next week
The Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen told members that 13 000 will strike the nation next week if final talks fail. President Chamberlain said the executive council set a 6 a.m. start next Monday. Labor officials scheduled a Washington meeting today to avert action and a court or congressional move could halt the strike. The union seeks a 54 percent wage raise over three years retroactive to Jan 1, 1970, noting current skilled signalmen earn about 3.78 dollars an hour. Past negotiations have yielded little progress and a cooling off period had earlier been ordered by President Nixon.

In Pittsburgh, Allegheny County Judge John G. Brosky ruled the 1909 peace or surety bond statute unconstitutional, saying it fails to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and breaches state and federal constitutions. The ruling followed a McKeesport case where a man faced $1,000 surety due to an estranged wife’s claim of threats. A separate note reports Big Run Telephone Co proposing a $12,400 annual rate hike for 705 customers in Jefferson, Clearfield and Indiana counties, pending PUC approval for July 1 implementation.
