Corry driver charged with drunken driving after crash

A 20 year old Corry motorist William A Apthorp was charged with drunken driving after losing control on West Smith street traveled across yards and lawns injuring passenger Russell Leight. Police stated the car struck a fire hydrant and went airborne flying 45 feet before landing and damaging several properties. A blood sample was sent to Erie for alcohol testing.

Free Husband Who Erred And Killed Wife

Philadelphia AP report: May grand jury refused to indict Lawrence Schrander 31 after he said he shot his wife Alice 26 in the kitchen believing her an intruder. Schrander, a telephone installer, said a break in preceded the April 16 incident and that he fired at a shadow. the woman died while her infant son awaited milk.

Gasoline In Sewer Evacuates 200 Residents in Vandergrift

Police evacuated nearly 200 people from about 50 families in Vandergrift Pennsylvania after gasoline appeared in a sewer system. A basement fire at a home sparked the alert, with Chief Calizzi saying the gas likely leaked from underground storage tanks at two service stations. Sewers were being flushed and stops to seepage were planned, with no return time yet.

Identification of Woman Found in Allegheny River Oil City

Mary Resmus, 65, of Riverside Drive Oil City, was identified as the drowned woman found in the Allegheny River near the Sand and Gravel Co. Police said the Venango County Coroner ruled death by drowning. Four men were jailed after causing a disturbance at the National Guard Armory during a dance and an attempted escape from jail occurred.

Klansman Scheduled For Retrial In Alabama Case

Alabama Attorney General Richmond Flowers says Callie Leroy Wilkins Jr. and two other Klansmen will face retrial in September for the killing of a civil rights demonstrator in Hayneville. Dominican Junta Calls Rebels To Aid Peace Effort

A five member military civilian ruling body formed by the Dominican junta urged Gol. Francisco Caamano's leftist rebels to help restore peace and national unity. Two local servicemen on leave were recalled this week signaling growing tensions as Gen. Antonio Imbert Barrera was named president of the new government group. Caamano asserted his forces represent the legitimate government and would not join a coalition with the junta. The reshaped leadership was sworn in by Supreme Court President Julio Acuello, with Imbert noted as a survivor of the 1961 assassination plot against Trujillo. Continued on Page Two.

Yanks Pummel Viet Targets

In Saigon AP reports more than 160 U S Air Force and Navy planes staged five raids against North Viet Nam targets and roads, dropping about 230 tons of bombs. The largest raid hit the Vinh air field with roughly 100 tons, as air war enters a second strike against an air base near Hanoi. A U S Marine was killed by Viet Cong guerrillas near Da Nang and two other American soldiers were wounded by land mines in central Viet Nam.
