In Washington officials kept response cautious calling the matter a diplomatic matter after the boast that an American plane was shot down over the Soviet Union by a remarkable rocket. State Department spokesman Lincoln White promised an immediate statement on the speech while awaiting further probes.
Khrushchev signals a shift toward consolidation at home as the Soviet leadership faces the alleged downing of an American plane and the weather craft loss. The premier vows a strong protest to the United States while a shakeup in party and government circles raises questions about Moscow’s path ahead.
Union City area police investigate the theft of blank American Express money orders from Mineo News Store on South Main. Frank Mineo, local Western Union and American Express agent, says the loss was discovered at about 7:30 p.m. after he used another money order and traced the last purchaser. Police from Union City and Cony State are probing as Mineo moves his business to the Palace Theatre lobby he owns.
In Mexico City 81 year old Julio Vicente Sesto, a Spanshi born writer, poet and journalist, died by suicide at his home after a period of ill health. Relatives reported his declining health.
Richard Keppel reports his infant son Luke fell from a chair near a feeding chain, the dog jumped and bit him on the face. The child was admitted with facial scratches and lacerations needing stitches. The dog, owned by Francis Holland, was ordered tied for 14 days to check rabies.
Not worth much Bobby Yow told police burglars took items valued at 150 dollars from his home. He did not give a value for a single item described as the watchdog.
Lutheran fund drive at St Pauls Church in Oklahoma concluded with 125410 collected toward a 125000 goal for a new addition, repairs, and organ upgrades. Dr Moorman Parker led the effort. construction to start in fall pending weather and pledge speed, with bids planned if estimates stay within 10000 of target.
In Wilburton and surrounding towns, brutal tornadoes struck Thursday night, killing 25 and injuring about 200 as torrential rains hindered rescue work. Power and communications were down. 11 deaths were reported in a college town with fears of more bodies under rubble. Estimated 75 were hospitalized.
State Police fire marshal and Titusville Fire Chief Helfrich pursued the cause of the Swanson's Department Store blaze with an estimated $125,000 damage as investigators question how the fire started. A false alarm at the Presbyterian Home drew fire crews from four companies, later traced to a quick acting alarm box.
In Charleroi Pennsylvania an AP report says a school bus crashed into a utility pole after the driver swatted a wasp. The bus burned quickly but all 36 children escaped through the emergency door. Driver Eugene Pritis said many would not have gotten out without it. A few children suffered minor bruises.
London AP reports Princess Margaret wed Antony Armstrong-Jones in an Anglican service at Westminster Abbey. The electronic wedding drew hundreds outside and 2,000 inside, with royal family attendance and a time honored vow sequence. The event marked a milestone in a 20th century fairy tale for the princess.
Harvey 8.1 Firestone Jr., 20, crippled heir to the Firestone fortune, leapt from a Havana Hilton balcony to his death. Police report he crawled to the railing after entering Cuba with an attendant and cousin. He was the grandson of Firestone Tire founder and son of the company president.
James M. Willis 22 of West Frederick street was released from custody after pleading guilty to larceny and paying restitution and court costs for three tires and two rims stolen last Saturday. Arrested by Chief Harvey Drake, Willis had been held on 300 bond. Auto supply dealer Sem Baumgarten testified he purchased the tires routinely and was not involved in the theft. The case was settled in alderman’s court with District Attorney approval.
Eighteen high school seniors from Clinton Michigan suffered carbon monoxide poisoning while a chartered bus carried them along the Pennsylvania Turnpike Nine were hospitalized as fumes caused headaches and nausea. A chaperone described the students growing groggy before a doctor was summoned and treatment began.
Washington AP reports President Eisenhower signed the civil rights bill, hailing it as a historic step forward for voting rights while Congress did not adopt all Hill recommendations. The Senate sent a 251 million dollar bill to aid chronically distressed areas, including loans and grants to create jobs in depressed industrial and rural regions.
UC Police Chief Iris Judge was told by Judge Samuel Rossiter that charging a young man with corrupting the morals of a teenager who drank beer at his home was unnecessary. Ronald Hamrick, 21, of Union City, faced four bottles of beer by a 15-year-old, and was fined $95 plus costs and placed on parole until payment.
A two year old girl, Laurie Silke of Clarion, died en route to Clarion Hospital after a 10 inch wire punctured her lung. Coroner J Ward Blot said the wire, part of a hanger, was cut free by a rotary mower as Laurie played nearby. Her father John Silke mowered the lawn. she screamed then grew faint with blood around the mouth.
A mother recounted watching her son lifted into the air by a tornado that wrecked their home and injured all in the family. The family, treated at All Saints Episcopal Hospital, described the destruction as widespread with many buildings leveled and the cityscape damaged. The death toll rose across several towns near the Arkansas border, with Wilburton hardest hit and vast areas left uninhabitable. Police reported extensive property damage including City Hall destroyed and dozens of homes demolished or damaged in a two to three block area.
Cory Area High School juniors in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test program posted strong scores. Guy Butters led with 14 of 190, followed by Catherine Ann Tate 140, Joseph Ryail 133, Donald Wharton 132, and Gaylord Anthony 131. Scores in this round determine eligibility for the next testing phase and potential scholarship based on percentile standings.
