Fallout from Soviet nuclear test tops Senate hearing
Radioactive fallout from a large Soviet nuclear test concentrates in the Northern Hemisphere and reaches earth faster than expected. Scientists told a Senate House Atomic Energy subcommittee that U S and British tests also descend faster, though not as quickly as Soviet debris. AEC Chairman John A McCone voiced reassurance, while Willard Libby revised his earlier timing estimates to one year for Soviet debris and four to five years for U S and British fallout. Meteorologist Lester Machta noted strontium is heavier in the north temperate zone and predicted overall Northern Hemisphere fallout twice the world average, with spring 1958 expected to bring the highest rate yet.

French steel pricing and tax issues hinder European market
Etzel notes French steel can be sold in the United States cheaper than German production. He cites modern mills and franc devaluation as advantages but points to high German taxes and low French levies as core barriers. A 6 percent tariff on French steel exports and currency differences complicate the common market transition toward a single currency.
