Cigarette tax hike OKayed by Lawrence in PA plan
Gov. Lawrence signed a bipartisan measure raising the five to six cent cigarette tax effective June 11 to fund a 1957 Korea War bonus. A companion law allows borrowing up to 150 million dollars to pay up to 500 dollar bonuses to about 290000 Pennsylvania veterans. The package also preserves a fifth cent tax and details eligibility based on service, with checks slated to begin after bond sales. A separate Pittsburgh coroner note identifies a body found in the Allegheny River as Joseph Wall, 74, of Darby.

Feet keep stepping on me in every day life
Hal Boyle notes how strangers repeatedly step on his feet causing bruises and smudges. He jokes about possible remedies from spiked shoes to pocketing feet, but concedes no practical fix, wondering why foot traffic so often hurts. The column blends humor with a light complaint about everyday clumsiness.
