Conversion of Series E Bonds

The first Series E savings bonds bought in 1941 totaling about 1.1 billion dollars will mature this month. About 1.091 billion dollars were issued in 1941 with additional Series D bonds available for refunding. A 1950 Fed survey found roughly one tenth of families own savings bonds, mainly Series E, maturing in 1961 or 1962. An act of March 24 1951 allows owners to extend for ten years. Extended bonds would yield about 2.0 percent semiannually. earnings start at 25 percent per year after seven years. Treasury notes rising Series E sales in early 1951, especially $25 and $50 bonds, with 1951 first quarter totals near 13.9 million and 10.8 million respectively. Despite overall E bond sales of 895 million in Q1 1951 versus 1.197 billion in 1950, small denominations boosted anti inflation efforts. About 47.5 percent of E bonds issued before March 31 1951 were cashed early. Some investors resist the Series H program as the dollar’s buying power falls.

Economists propose government bonds with built in escalator clause
