Auto firms cut output amid steel rationing
By Associated Press Detroit May 8 The latest steel cutback hits passenger car and station wagon production with a new five percent reduction starting June 1. Manufacturers may use no more than 75 percent of the volume used in the first half of 1950. Concerns arise over possible civilian car quotas, echoing 1941 wartime limits. Auto factories have built 2,196,637 passenger cars and 537,115 trucks this year, with 113,343 cars and 30,594 trucks attributed to this week’s output. Some makers, mainly smaller firms, have halted output due to material controls, Kaiser-Frazer among them, which has halved production and now begins a two-week shutdown of car assembly lines on Monday.
