Allied forces press in Central Europe as Red Army armor advances toward Vienna and a potential junction with American units. The four powers United States Britain China and Russia are largely in accord on 16 of 20 amendments, including a review mechanism and regional defense roles. Molotov may request more time to decide while awaiting Russian concurrence or present alternative proposals to the United Nations conference.
A force of about 50 B 29s bombed three Kyushu airfields at day’s end in the third neutralization raid on Japan. Earlier 150 to 200 B 29s hit the Hiro naval aircraft plant at Kure on Honshu, marking the first attack on Kure’s war industry. In other news, the Harrisburg legislature debated the one cent emergency gasoline tax to fund road work as adjournment nears. In London, a Nazi propaganda claim about Hitler’s body being hidden was reported. In New York, 1 088 American POWs arrived for embarkation, with furloughs to follow.
A May 17 induction call lists 26 men from the Forty-Union City draft district. From Corry four names head the local group while others are from Union City Erie Jamestown and surrounding towns. They will travel by bus to Pittsburgh for processing and likely begin training that day or soon after.
Army officials disclose plans to discharge 2,000,000 soldiers beginning with the fall of Germany and to send 6,000,000 picked troops against Japan. Priority will go to those with most dependents and strongest service records, using a point system weighting dependency, combat service, overseas duty, and length of service. About 300,000 to 400,000 will remain abroad in the 11th Army to occupy Germany, while roughly 1,400,000 are expected to be discharged within a year after V E Day.
The fight winds down in northwest Germany Holland and Denmark as Allied forces led by Montgomery gain a final capitulation. About 500000 German troops surrender and cease fire orders take effect in Holland Denmark and northwest Germany. Stockholm says Germans in Norway will yield with no battle and reports indicate a total German surrender approaching four million.
London dispatch says Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz acknowledged fighting is senseless and may surrender. Swedish and Oslo reports push toward capitulation in Norway with Terboven resigning. Allies announce cessation of hostilities conditionally, with Montgomery noting German armies in the west surrendering to Allied forces.
George Buckinet has ordered a tin salvage collection on Tuesday May 8 in the city. Residents should have tins cleaned packed and ready in cartons for school pickup. Students will transport tin to Concord Harding Junior High Washington and Bairview schools. County headquarters arranged for a follow up pickup the next day.
