Melvin Dummar of Willard Utah identified as heir to an estimated 125 million from Howard Hughes will. He has emerged from seclusion to tell reporters the inheritance unnerved him and he cannot recall his plans if money is obtained. Estate battles center on California probate with Dietrich named attorney and Richard C. Gano as temporary administrator.
Reagan swept all 24 Texas congressional districts to capture 96 delegates, signaling a wide campaign advantage and strengthening his path to the Kansas City convention. Ford remains ahead nationally but faces an energized GOP, while Carter won the Democratic North Texas result with 89 delegates to 9 for Bentsen.
Corryman remains in intensive care at Titusville Hospital after a late Saturday crash on Route 6 three miles south of Titusville. Lawrence Bresne, 25, of 147 Matt Street, was rushed by Titusville Ambulance to hospital with a fractured leg, pelvic fracture and multiple contusions. Police said the car left the highway, struck a tree and split on impact. the vehicle was valued at 200. Local fire department assisted at scene.
A Rome man pulled a distressed woman from the Niagara River near the American Falls. Elmer Gardner sustained minor injuries but saved the woman who appeared to attempt suicide. she was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for care.
A Pallottine Fathers fundraising appeal shows hunger relief as motive but Maryland officials say only about 10 percent of gifts reach missions abroad. Congress debates charity regulation with three proposals: disclose spending, curb mail solicitations, or require at least half of funds to go to charity.
Erie County Redevelopment Authority director Virginia Nuzzo announced higher income eligibility for the Winterization Program. New limits allow one or two persons up to 5 000, three up to 5 790, four up to 6 875, five up to 8 000, six up to 9 125, plus 1 125 for each additional person. applicants must own a single family home. Applications are being taken at the Redevelopment office on West Pleasant Street. Storm windows have arrived and workmen will return to complete earlier-serviced homes.
