Thirty seven Corry volunteers joined twelve from Elgin and six from Columbus for sessions led by Erie and Union City instructors. A house burn at East Smith street and controlled blazes at the municipal training site provided hands on practice with extinguishers, foam and smoke masks. A bystander incident near East Washington street led to a hospital stay for Mrs Kevin Grant and her infant Christopher, after a truck fire caused by a discarded cigarette and a mattress blaze.

Legislature Top Truck Load Limit Bill Leads Agenda
In Harrisburg a proposal to lift the 40 foot trailer cap for trucks tops a slate of issues before the legislature. The measure, by Sen. Clarence Manbeck, would allow longer tractors with longer trailers while staying within overall limits. Supporters say Pennsylvania would join the eastern seaboard in permitting longer rigs. Opponents include rail interests citing fit on rail cars and highway safety concerns from the AAA and U.S. Transportation Dept findings. A second bill by Sen. Henry Cianfiani would permit provisional licenses after suspensions under the point system, drawing opposition from motorists groups. The session also weighs driver license reforms and conservation and surface mining controls ahead of Gov. Shapp’s budget reveal expected May 11.
