Gold Outflow From Ft Knox Tied to 1958–59 Policies
The First National City Bank of New York explains in its May bank letter that large dollar assets held by private foreign banks and individuals, valued at four billion dollars more than a decade ago, fueled gold drains in 1958 and 1959. Tightening credit and a near-balanced federal budget slowed the drain, with higher money rates and fiscal restraint halting the outflow. The bank argues continued sound monetary policy will keep the dollar as the world’s leading reserve currency and that short term dollar investments will be gold equivalents.
