He warned a major cut would amount to virtual abandonment of the program and emphasized its security and trade benefits. He spoke at a dinner with the Committee for International Growth and the Committee for Strengthening the Frontiers of Freedom.
ABC president Leonard Goldenson defended Dick Clark against allegations of preferential treatment while denying payola influence. House investigators named Goldenson and WABC manager Ben Hoberman as witnesses as they neared the end of a five month inquiry into under cover payments to disc jockeys. Clark, questioned over a $47,000 payment from American Airlines for his Bandstand appearance, maintained payola was never his concern.
A home fire in Mine Pennsylvania left four children dead in the Armstrong County dwelling. Margaret Dors 16 Deborah 7 Paul 12 and Howard Jr 4 perished, with only Darla 17 escaping after waking her mother and leaping from a second floor window. The fire started when cooking grease burst flames in the kitchen, neighbors tried to help as ladders and broken windows failed against the heat. The mother Vera about 45 was treated for shock and possible injuries. the father Howard was at work and later hospitalized.
Corry resident Joseph Hair on West Congress Street parked overtime in front of the Post Office Sunday and received a ticket. He questioned the value of that space, noting a newspaper request for clarification. Police Chief Harley Drake explained Sunday pickups at federal post offices draw crowds near churches, making parking scarce, and that meters in front of the Post Office are not reserved for box holders. overtime violations are ticketed.
Patrolman Julius Worms and his brother Richard Watus were cited for reckless driving after a 5 AM incident on Center street near the railroad crossing. Watus was temporarily suspended pending disposition. Eyewitnesses reported separate cars and speeding. officers did not arrest at the scene. Mayor Kinley and Alderman Cobbett were informed. Kinley vowed department shakeups if needed.
