President Truman announced the unconditional capitulation of German armies in Italy and southern Austria. Col Gen Heinrich Von Vietinghoff disclosed the surrender of all German land, sea, and air forces in the region. About 25 divisions and over 120000 troops had already surrendered in northern Italy. Milan radio says Rodolfo Graziani ordered the Ligurian army to lay down arms. Hans Von Mackensen and staff surrendered near the Swiss frontier and head for internment. London May 2 The Luxembourg radio said that a German capitulation in Holland was imminent. The Allied controlled station reported reports from the Canadian front indicating armistice negotiations had been in progress for more than two hours.
Mrs Charles Craker suffered a fractured hip and severe bruises after her husband reversed their car near Connie's grocery on West Main street. She had returned from the Post Office and stepped into the path of the backing vehicle. She was treated at Cany Hospital and later moved to Brie for specialist examination and care.

Paris dispatch reports General Eisenhower releasing a statement that Heinrich Himmler told Folke Bernadotte on April 24 that Germany was finished and Hitler was very ill, possibly dead. The SHAEF note says Hitler could not be expected to live more than two days, contradicting Hamburg radio’s hero’s death claim.
The City Streets Department started the first oiling of earth streets today. A Warren truck delivered 4500 gallons of material, pumped into a storage tank on North Second Avenue. Additional deliveries are expected this week as oiling expands to Grace Street and West Trying Street, with property owners in several wards funding the work if weather stays favorable. Councilman Besson said the program will extend to other streets where applications and funding exist, aiming for rapid access.
Corry Ration Board Chairman Monroe announced curtailment of public hours due to workload. Beginning tomorrow, offices in the Ajax building will operate from 9 p.m. to 1 p.m. daily, except Saturdays when the office closes at noon.

Reports from Rochester indicate the Wolverine passenger train derailed on a downtown overpass, killing the engine driver and injuring at least 40 others as seven cars left the track.
