Reports from London and Paris detail multiple shipping disasters. The 4505 ton Hinur iro n of Caklilo is sunk near Seilig Island while en route to New York. no confirmation yet from the Admiralty. The South Atlantic, with its crew saved, reportedly sinks off Ireland near Arantle. In Dieppe a German submarine is sunk by a French squadron. the sub waters are shown and a large crew is lost.
Seventy thousand people walked to work in Springfield after a city strike halted streetcar service. Only government mail cars operated. impact extended to Chippes Westfield Palmer and other smaller areas disrupting daily travel.
London reports several major WWI developments including a British ship sunk off Cape Town, a German thrust near Czernowitz and Polish fronts, Austrian Italian border clashes, and Russian port bombardments. Dispatches claim Italian and Austrian forces clash while German activity shifts on the Eastern Front. naval bombardments continue near the Dardanelles.
A farewell banquet hosted by postal clerks and railway mail staff honored Captain of Post Office J F Austin at the new Federal building in Corry. Attendees included city carriers clerks and officials with speeches praising Austin’s decade of service and his role in developing the office and city post services.
