Defense Dept to Close 52 Military Installations
The Defense Department announced today the closing or curtailment of activities at 2 U.S. bases as part of a White House plan to eliminate obsolete or surplus installations among 6,700. Estimated annual savings could reach 220 million dollars over time, with about 15,000 U.S. personnel affected and 19,000 overseas. McNamara said relocations would be pursued where possible and that the program would unfold over 12 to months, avoiding sudden impact. Details on the 21 bases to be shut or reduced overseas were not released.
