Papers of the Presidents open to public search at Hyde Park
About 85 percent of Franklin D. Roosevelts state, political and personal papers are opened at the Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park this month. The remaining 15 percent will be reevaluated as world conditions change and as individuals mentioned are deceased. The Hyde Park collection is larger than any previous public figure's. Archivist Wayne Grover notes the decision to open a president’s papers within five years of death is unprecedented in U.S. history. Roosevelt had suggested 10 to 15 years sealing, with some up to 50 years. Committee members expect few papers to be withheld beyond 25 years. The papers should clarify Roosevelt's administration, though many entourage members have published books, limiting new revelations. FDR’s major public papers and addresses were published in 13 volumes. The most recent unsealed set was Lincoln’s papers, opened July 26, 1947, 82 years after Lincoln’s death, revealing 18350 letters and drafts but few startling new data.
