The State Milk Control Commission on March 25 announced a reduction in the minimum retail price of milk in Philadelphia to 22 1/2 cents a quart, effective April 1, with producer price set at 40 cents per hundred pounds. The United Steel Workers will not meet with Mr. Wilson as Murray defends postponing stoppages at President Truman’s request. Murray accuses Wilson of being uninformed and briefs him via executives, while the WSB pushes an 17% hourly pay rise and a union shop amid industry talks in New York.
WSB members debate a proposed pay boost with April 1 as the cut off. The plan would raise hourly wages by a small amount and faces repudiation by Wilson’s administration. Joseph A. Belme and other officers plan to press for full WSB bargaining sessions with steel firms beginning Wednesday.
