GOP STARTS DRIVE for CONGRESS

The earliest start on the most intensive Congressional campaign in history has been launched by the new Republican high command. The fight for control of Congress in mid term will not be easy. With no Eisenhower coattails to bring in doubtful seats, results may be more disastrous for the Republicans. Democrats polled 1,600,000 more votes for the House last fall, overturning the President's lead of 9,500,000. President Eisenhower believes the party lost Congress because the people did not feel the party was firmly supporting his modern Republicanism. He endorsed the plat of the new national chairman, Mende Acorn, for six regional fact finding conferences to assure that the voice of the people is truly the Voice of the Republican party. The meetings will be held Providence, Salt Lake City, Cincinnati, and Trenton, spanning all 48 states, followed by a session of the national committee in Washington in June to set strategy from the country at large. The more than yearlong campaign aims to elect every Republican candidate for Congress who has been regularly nominated. The stake is the 1960 victory.
