Roaring Seas Out Hope For 67 Lost On Plane
TOKYO A huge four engine military transport plane with 67 passengers and 10 crew disappeared early today while en route from Travis Air Force Base near San Francisco to Tokyo. The flight carried 21 Air Force personnel, 17 Army and 10 Navy men, two civilian government employees and a servicewoman. The last position was 200 miles southeast of Tokyo with fuel for about 3½ hours more. Visibility was reduced by heavy seas, and search efforts by U S Navy and Japanese Coast Guard were hampered by weather. The aircraft operated by MATS, a West Wake turbulence possibility prompted speculation the plane might have strayed from a chain of islands southeast of Tokyo. (Continued on Page Five)
