Bolts, fish-plates, and a 60 pound wrench were found at the scene.
The White House yacht Potomac started its voyage off the Florida coast with President Roosevelt aboard, beginning a delayed deepsea fishing trip. Attorney General Jackson and officials including Bary E. Hopkins joined the president on the trip, which marks the start of the voyage today.
Plymouth, March 22. German night raiders blasted the southwest English port for six hours, hitting a shelter with 250 homeless residents and leaving hundreds more wandering bomb-pitted streets. Harrisburg March 22 The Milk Control Commission says the case about selling milk to the federal government at prices below the state minimum may go to the U S Supreme Court. Penn Dairys Inc of Lancaster seeks to sell half pints to Indiantown Gap military post at 2.15 cents each, well under the 25 cent state minimum. The firm argues it is not under the commission’s jurisdiction as it deals directly with the federal government on Indian town Gap sales. The commission contends the state minimum price remains applicable. The issue has appeared in lower courts but not yet finally decided. The commission aims to settle the matter territorially.
German armed forces report a large North Atlantic raid against British shipping. The fleet, including battleships and U boats, claims to have sunk about 224000 tons of enemy tonnage, with additional losses from air attacks and a convoy off the West African coast. High command says 234000 tons were sunk overall, with ships and submarines scouring the sea and even a casualty to a cruiser near Malta.
U S officer Capt Thomas C Kinkaid said the British raid on Italy was hard hit and conditions in Italy have grown worse over the past two months with food and ammunition harder to obtain. The Dixie Clipper carried 28 passengers including Dr Chain Walemann and Sir Pfray Khan Nout to Rome. In Erie Pa on March 2 authorities recovered the body of 14 year old Joseph Dumanski while rescuing 12 year old Charles Dumanski. They had been clearing a coke dump when the pile collapsed trapping the boys. Their mother Mrs Anna Themanski, a widow, reported them missing at midnight after they did not return from their work.
