Maple Sugar and Syrup Production in Pennsylvania
Maple sap yields sugar and syrup products, including cake frostings and maple candies, driven by the spring movement in sugar maples. In Pennsylvania about ten percent of the product is processed into syrup. Average prices range from $2.32 to $2.95 per gallon for syrup and 25 to 95 cents per pound for sugar. Somerset County leads in syrup and sugar output, with Susquehanna, Mooga, Bradford, Potter, Warren, and Allegheny counties forming the main maple region.

Baie March 19.4 Fred Halverson 4, convicted cop fåller has made another bid for freedom from the Western penitentiary. He seeks to escape serving the remainder of an original term at four years and two months to ten years for the killing of State Highway Patrolman Russell T. Swanson in North East, April 19, 1929. He was sentenced Feb. 13, 1980. His plea asks for parole with the state pardon board. District Attorney Mortimer E. Grayham plans to oppose.
