A barn and the house on the former Willard Johnson Farm southwest of Cutting were destroyed by a mysterious incendiary fire Saturday night. Neighbors say the blaze started in the barn and quickly engulfed the unoccupied house, with investigators noting signs of arson and seeking suspects amid fears of a renewed torching wave in the area.
The Corry Wooden Ware Manufactory led by D. H. Wilder and W. R. Howe grew from a 1886 project to a bustling 129 by 90 foot main building housing a full wood ware complex. The plant used multiple steam rooms, a circular sawmill, stave and turning rooms, and numerous specialized machines for hoops, handles, and bails. The firm also ran a large lumber operation with about 700 acres of timber near Lecily, plus a 4 mile main line and branches of the Winton Valley Railroad serving Corry mills. They employed 150 men with projected annual sales around 250000 dollars.

United Press reports the submarine S4 warped into the Boston Navy Yard dry dock without mishap as divers aided keel support. Raised from Provincetown last Saturday, the craft began settling in the water-filled compartment under Commander Harold Saunders supervision.
Over one hundred guests attended the Emmanuel Guild St Patrick’s dinner in the Parish Hall. Mrs Boyer Bus ker sang, Miss Helen Grace Merrick played violin, and Miss Mary Gentiman performed solos as proceeds benefit Emmanuel Church.
In Pittsburgh on March 19th the two year battle of 18 year old Rody P. Marshall Jr. ended as his spinal injury from July 1985 proved fatal. The youth, once cheerful and hopeful for recovery, died after years of confinement and struggle.
Noted orator William Bennett, described as a powerful and inspiring speaker, will address a crowd in Cory on Wednesday March 27. He will present an afternoon talk at the high school auditorium and a public evening lecture titled Pathways to Power, with Mrs Bennett accompanying him. admission is free.
Miss Mary Consira chairs Corry Woman's Club program for March 22 at Hotel Corry. American Citizenship and Literary depart ment will present a play Jane Addams Reception. Music by Music department directed by Miss May Howard. Art Department decorations. Refreshments by American Home Department. Members urged to attend.
John H. Jones of Bertha Consumers Coal Co urges a federal coal commission to oversee the industry like the Interstate Commerce Commission. He asks for a presidential appointment, cross-state coal company and miner talks to prevent strikes, legal consolidation rights, and supervised selling agencies.
Mrs. Charles J. Haupin of 908 North Center street died suddenly from heart trouble Saturday afternoon after area guests arrived. Born March 15 1859 in New York state she lived in Corry for about thirty years. Survived by husband two sons J W Pier and Galvin A Pier a daughter Ethel Pier grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 pm from North Center street home with Rett B Bartlett pastor officiating. Interment in local cemetery.
TD McQuoun of Cleveland is being held by Erie police in connection with an automobile collision on the Buffalo road east of Wel e where Mrs. Gilbert Larsen and Miss Alice Hays of Edinboro were injured when their car was struck by McQuoun s vehicle. He is accused of intoxication.
Kenneth Gregory of 520 Spring Street won the Journal add-a-Line Limerick contest daily award and the grand prize. Helen Morrell, a five time winner, was runner up and received centre tickets on five occasions.
Frank Gillett, 48, proprietor of Star Garage on North Center street, died Sunday at 4 30 p m at his home after several months illness from a heart condition. Born June 10 1879 in Union City he moved to Corry seventeen years ago with his wife Anna Cole. He built Star Garage starting March 16 1911 and expanded it with a northside addition. he distributed Buick cars in the area. He was a member of the Presbyterian church FR A BL Corry lodge Hils Rotary Club and is survived by his widow a brother J E Gillett Union City and a sister Mrs P H Colt War. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p m from the Tate home with private interment in Union City cemetery.
In Pittston Pennsylvania on March 18 a shooting at the Alfrida home left one man dead and two wounded. Investigators linked the violence to a possible blackmail dispute, with a youth claiming he began the shooting after a stranger drew a revolver and shot his father in the abdomen.
Pennsylvania Governor John Fisher may testify before the Senate committee investigating the coal industry. He criticized the inquiry in Houston and argued for state federal cooperation to stabilize production, transportation rates, and wages while ensuring coal supply at reasonable prices.
