California fans focus on Coolidge remarks about good times while Senator Wagner claims the president has lulled Congress and the nation into believing labor conditions are satisfactory. Gotham solon pushes for unemployment inquiry.
In a three cornered fight California Democrats struggle over endorsements for the Houston convention. Senator Walsh of Montana and Governor Smith of New York figure in rival camps as supporters line up behind Hoover in the Republican ranks. Delegates and local headquarters shift across the Pacific Coast as campaigns heat up in March primaries and national contest plans.
A study of Corry’s 1860s business directory lists hotels shops and services, including Downer House Passaic Hotel Gilson and American Hotel, banks, grogeries, hardware, printing, and professionals. Veteran liveryman Al Taylor helps illuminate early city life and memories of residents and firms.
A string of air incidents over the weekend claimed several lives and sparked a congressional push. Five men died in a San Diego crash shortly after takeoff. President Coolidge faced calls to address unemployment as labor data showed declines in manufacturing, rail, and job vacancies, with estimates of four million unemployed.
Three men Powers Hapgood Wile and another arreste d in Pittston in a mine labor feud case charged with inciting riot by United Press. They were jailed by Mayor Gillespie after failing to post a $1 000 bond for disorderly conduct. Hapgood blamed limits on free speech while the mayor urged order as crowds sang and waved mourning bands in front of Pittston City Hall.
A severe March gale lashed New York State causing widespread damage. Winds exceed 60 miles per hour, disrupting wire communications as lines and branches were torn down. Snowdrifts blocked roads and left many areas impassable with damages projected in the millions. In Washington the Supreme Court set April 23 for hearings on the Great Lakes diversion cases.
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Gowman announced the appointment of Samuel Wynne as permanent prohibition administrator for the eastern district of Pennsylvania. Wynne’s appointment is under civil service and his office will be in Philadelphia.
The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee slated eighteen witnesses for Wednesday’s start of a probe into coal use conditions in Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Officials aim to uncover safety and regulatory issues prompting the inquiry.
The Avt Department of the Woman's Club plans the second annual Style show at NE Senior High on Wednesday. A rehearsal is tonight, with two parts featuring foreign costume displays and modern styles modeled by club members and city residents. Special music and dances are planned. reserve seats began selling at Miss Contra's. Admission is $1 general, 50 cents for students, with a 10 cent reserve-seat surcharge.
The Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for authority to use the nine mile city owned subway railway in Rochester. The tunnel line runs in the former harbor canal bed and cost about 12 million dollars to build to service local industries requiring steam road access into the city.
Washington March 5 postal receipts in 40 cities totaled 30,546,872 dollars, up 1,248,184 from February 1 figures. Postmaster General New announced the gain, led by Memphis Tennessee with a 278 percent increase and Akron with a notable per cent increase.
The Corry Hospital Association board elected Miss Anna E. Kerns of Van Wert Ohio as superintendent, succeeding Miss Clara M. Widdifield who resigned. Kerns a Lima City Hospital graduate has Army Service time and previously led Van Wert County Hospital. She comes to Corry from Meadville where Widdifield has joined.
Washington March 5 Colonel Charles A Lindbergh left Bolling Field at 10 22 for an unannounced destination after two days as a man of mystery He was believed bound for St Louis with possible en route stop The plane sustained a skid break earlier but the damage was quickly repaired in the field Officials said Lindbergh showed interest only in the motor concept and had no financial stake Maitland Caldwell spoke of the matter in Albany NY and Selfridge Field Michigan
Washington March 5 Henry W McMaster and Francis Skelding receivers of the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway Company lost in the United States Supreme Court their motion to name three spectutors of the estate of the late George J Gould financier in place of Gould In a suit for the accounting brought in 1910 against Gould Myron T Herrick now ambassador to France and their now dead The company receivers in 1925 revived the proceedings to include Goulds executors G I Gould Kingdon Gould and Schuyler Neilson Rice
Fire swept the Buchnia farm home near Fifé Lake Saskatchewan early today killing six children and seriously burning one survivor. The blaze destroyed the residence nine miles south of the town as authorities investigated the cause.
Pittsburgh march 6 alleged gang leader Sai Tawarski faces trial in Allegheny county criminal court over the sensational jail escape of John Vasbinder and Paul Jawarski. He is indicted on murder conspiracy and assault charges linked to the plan and escape.
Rep LaGuardia and Rep N Y opposed a provision granting ten year contracts to air mail operators as unnecessary and a bad precedent. The bill would also cut air mail postage rates from ten cents to five cents per half ounce. Jelly defended Lindbergh’s support as a boost to commercial aviation. LaGuardia warned the Lindbergh linkage would not help. Separate item notes Mrs. I A Miller and Ralph Sterty visiting Brie on business.
Four members of Uniontown City Police will be given a public hearing after a confrontation with Mayor Luther Crawford. The officers Fenty O'Neil William Pike David Turney and Roscoe Minor allegedly were pressured to resign but refused, demanding the hearing.
