North Vietnam fired 37 foot SAM2 surface to air missiles at three U S planes supporting the Laotian ground drive to disrupt the Ho Chi Minh trail. U S Command said no planes were damaged as fighting rages in Laos near Hill 30 and Lao Bao. U S and South Vietnamese forces widen air campaign across Indochina to ease pressure on 40 000 troops in Laos and Cambodia.

Pennsylvania Senate approves compromise 3.5% income tax plan

The Senate Finance Committee backed a $1.58 billion 18 month revenue package from Jan 1 1971 to June 30 1972. It includes a 3.5 percent tax on personal federal taxable income retroactive to Jan 1 1971, continued gross receipts tax, higher capital stock levy, and a 12 percent corporate net income tax. Governor Shapp signaled conditional support citing needed revenue and additional taxes.

Missing loot thwarts theft case at Fort Wayne aviation firm

Police report the missing loot from a larceny case has ended charges against the prime suspect. Sgt Kenneth Nichols notes the loot was taken from the pot station while evidence in the equipment theft from an airplane owned by Kenneth Enright of Fort Wayne. DA Michael Pi states the absence of loot collapses the prosecution. he says Rev Enright could have faced trial if identifiable loot had been recovered. Also stolen were a siphoning hose from a Rogers Structural Steel truck while the station was unattended.
