Peanut price supports and acreage debate in New Deal era

The article analyzes how political influence shaped basic commodity support policies during the New Deal, focusing on peanuts. It notes peanuts’ lower money value compared to other crops, mid May farm prices at 11.2 cents per pound against 13.6 cents parity, and government holding 273 million pounds against 193 million a year earlier. Peanut growers back acreage restrictions to defend 90 percent parity supports, while Congress and the Administration discuss mandatory 90 percent price supports and potential acreage limits in a broader price support compromise.

Peanut Surplus Cut Census Aims By Farm Bill

The omnibus farm bill advances in the House tomorrow. It would keep mandatory price supports at 90 percent of parity for six crops for one more year, while expanding the secretary’s power to restrict acreage on price supported crops. For peanuts, the secretary could cut peanut acreage by five percent per year until the surplus ends, reflecting peanut production concentrated in the South including Georgia, North and South Carolina, Texas, and neighboring states.
