County assessor forecasts 10 percent rise in 1957 real estate value

Chief Assessor Martin Gregor said the uniform assessment revision planned for 1957 would lift the county real estate assessment about ten percent overall while not raising tax revenue. He projected the current 93.8 percent assessment rate could drop to between 27 and 30 percent of fair market value depending on final county-wide valuations, with total assessments near 176 million dollars excluding new construction. He cautioned against lowering the 10-mill tax rate due to the expense of changing the accounting system and noted potential regional variance in assessments. Gregor aims to complete appraisals on 12,500 to 15,000 parcels by next spring, with city properties transcribed from municipal records. Delays could push revision deadlines beyond state-mandated timing. In a separate item, a five-year-old girl was killed by a runaway trailer truck on Route 31 near Mount Pleasant. Christine Zmi je wnak of Brooklyn was the victim. seven others were injured.
