In Wilkes-Barre on June 2, fewer than 25,000 of Pennsylvania’s 20,000 bituminous and 130,000 other miners returned to work. Gerald Edwards aged 27 of Bportans purg is in Corry Hospital with injuries to his left forearm and head after an accident at Bowell Motor Company where he is employed. He was driving a machine when his bin collided with cover guards. Hospital says condition is serious.
Ashurlalad Press reports Washington June 28 that Ernest Frederick Lehmite, a New York City priest, was charged with gathering esktruia information for Germany. Federal Bureau of Investigation arrest followed a Brooklyn warrant. Lehmite allegedly wrote letters in 1942 about New York Harbor shipping and troop movements while using fake names. If convicted, he faces up to death or thirty years in prison. Lehmite, a German-born U.S. citizen naturalized in 1924, had worked for the German consulate until World War I and emigrated from Cughaven.
The FDA opens new area offices in Altoona Harrisburg Williamsport and Erie to supervise federal slaughter permits and quotas. Erie office opens July 5 with further coordination with USDA committees and war boards to curb black markets and ensure sanitary slaughtering conditions.
Italian press warns civilians to brace for mass defense as Allies intensify raids on Sicily Sardinia and the mainland. Reports say cities will be fortified street by street and that men women and children will be mobilized. Invasion rumors persist amid air bombardment and material shortages.
Washington June 21 Secretary Ickes told the House Ways and Means Committee the government has no desire to nationalize the coal industry and hopes to return the mines to private owners at the earliest possible moment. He said a return would be possible but aid would be offered only as the government seized a first opportunity to retreat them to private ownership when there is reasonable assurance that miners will work for private owners or when workers and operators sign a contract.
The Cory Public Library will close during July and August for the usual summer break. Librarian Mrs Marvble Away stated the library would reopen with Thursday hours after midsummer, with adjusted times from 2 to 4 pm on select days.
Gordon Levi Bergman 30 of Jamestown piloted a Piper Cub as it forced down at a Rome township farm after takeoff from a field. He sustained chest bruises and a hip cut. the crash tore down REA power lines, cutting service to nearby farms. Bergman was taken to Titusville for care before returning to Jamestown. Investigating officers include J. W. Choate and state police.
The Department of Justice charged three American chemical companies with forming a world wide cartel in conspiracy with German British Italian Japanese and other foreign interests. Defendants include National Lead Company Fletcher W Rockwell Claude F Garesche Du Pont de Nemours and Company Carl H Rupprecht Gustav Jebsen and Titan Company. The indictment targets titanium compounds used in war material production and cites involvement of major foreign firms such as IG Farben Imperial Chemical Industries Montecatini and Folusan Bogyo Exhuststis.
Residents dug jagged shrapnel from yards and walls after a four hour bombardment. High powered shells pierced mile from the blaze, injuring at least four people. A railroad worker lost a jaw to shell fragments, and a military guard was posted as crews fought the fire and cleared tracks west of the depot.
Erie county court held a hearing this afternoon before Alderman George Hi Gordon on charges of indecent assault involving Yealey of Baile Street. Yealey pleaded not guilty and was remanded to jail pending bond. Boyd Yealey faces similar indecent assault allegations connected to advances toward two children in a shack. A 16 year old, Arthur Bacon, charged with aggravated assault and battery, was jailed for juvenile court disposition. A large bear invaded the city last night, described as three times larger than a large dog. Mrs. Axel Hilding reported the sighting near West Smith Street and Esso Hall. It climbed to a gas station and a local restaurant, rummaging trash bins for food as police and residents surveyed the damage. Black bear activity has been noted in surrounding counties, with notable property damage in recent years.

A weekend severe storm tore through Concord Township and surrounding areas causing extensive damage. A barn on the Paul Aikens farm near Ormsbee Road was struck by lightning and destroyed, with four cows killed on the Elton Canon farm. Trees were uprooted, power and telephone lines damaged, and rainfall totals reached about four tenths of an inch. Additional reports noted lightning strikes, scattered livestock losses, and power outages in nearby districts including Mil Village and Cambridge Springs.
