Extra police patrols guard the Garden stage as Democratic leaders wrestle over a Klan plank. A late afternoon session faces a potential climax with heated debate on anti Klan language and broader League of Nations issues.
Rolland Finucan, 22, of Union City, was critically injured when his car collided with Erie train No 46 on East Wayne Street. Metray, driver Miles McCray, was hurt and reportedly intoxicated. McCray’s partner died later from injuries, and a truck driver Fred Garrell also sustained injuries as witnesses described a high speed crash near the Corry hospital.
In New York on June 28 United Press reports Gov Charles W Bryan’s odds in Wall Street betting where 1 to 610 favored his Democratic nomination. Bryan also led as running mate options at 1 to 105 with Al Smith of New York. Much money shifted between these propositions as markets moved.
Tour members funded the officers gathering of motor clubs in northwestern Pennsylvania held last evening at Conneaut bake. Local members Al Munger W Ed Marsh Perry Bixby and G W Patterson attended. A majority of clubs were represented and a discussion highlighted road service as vital next to good roads. Members will receive a list of service stations and urged to pay dues and obtain the year plate to use the road service.
An afternoon concert featured Mrs Harriet Beton's pupils with performances by Midas, Helen Jones, Beatrice Deschamp, and others. Mrs Dawson Olmstead gave a talk on Eurythmics, sang, and a group of songs delighted the audience. The refined program impressed parents and guests as they awaited official Democratic convention bulletins.
United Press reports a split in the Democratic platform committee over naming the Ku Klux Klan. The panel voted 4 to 16 to pledge religious freedom without naming the Klan, with a minority report expected and leaders predicting floor action at the convention.
Report of a collision on East Columbus Avenue near His Vet Farm last night left both vehicles badly damaged. One car driven by John Wise of Spiritusheading was to Olympus for repairs. the other owner’s name could not be learned. Murray Fisher visited fire department this morning.
Jack the Peeper, a window peeper reported on the southside for one or two weeks, was chased along South Center Street last night as residents pursued him between East Pleasant Street homes. Observers kept a clear description for a possible capture, with plans to guard the area and deter similar visits.
A severe storm swept Nebraska Iowa and portions of Wisconsin injuring several and causing heavy damage. Five people died in Peoria Illinois and near Pekin Illinois as wind gusts shattered structures and flooded rivers. Rail schedules were disrupted along the path of destruction with widespread travel delays reported.
Ward announced the appointment of B. L. Scott, a former Corry resident, as director of the restoration bureau at Easter Penitentiary with a $6,000 yearly salary. Scott succeeds Daniel Buckley, who resigned amid internal disputes and a welfare investigation. Doctor Potter defended the appointment while noting Buckley overstepped authority during the department reforms.
Statewide figures show 120 accidents on state highways in May with 12 deaths and 104 injuries. Police logged 1,175 accidents in 36 cities, with 11 killed and 1,607 injured overall. Allentown Carbondale Connellsville Johnstown McKeesport New Castle did not report highway data.
Mrs Leroy Springs of South Carolina, chosen by the Democratic National Committee as a leading female organizer, becomes the first woman to be placed in nomination for vice president by a major party at the national convention. She would be nominated by her state delegation for president of the United States, though election is unlikely.
Scores of Corryites are expected to attend the county picnic and holiday demonstration at Girard with plans for a large turnout. The farmers picnic features a pitching contest open to Erie county teams under 40 foot rules and shoe requirements. Madison and Solare report a high tension Democratic convention in Garden New York where a Klan plank sparks debate, possible rioting, and police deployment. William Bryan seeks divine guidance as factions clash over religious issues in the platform. a key vote to decide the plank is postponed.
Directors of the Rivenls Chuir will meet Monday after two at 4 o clock sharp in the Municipal Building. All members are urged some.
