Fire discovered in a barn on Dr. Meals property by two Corry men triggered destruction along the Erie freight route. Stores and barns across Columbus were consumed, with preliminary estimates placing the loss near twenty thousand dollars. Investigations focus on origin and containment.
Four principal structures and several barns in Columbus East Side were swept by a major rear-block fire last night. Firemen and volunteers battled flames through the night with water, pumps, and trucks. Loss estimates ranged from fifteen to twenty-two thousand dollars. several occupants moved furniture as crews saved the hardware store stock and nearby homes.
The fire occurred after dark burning the Meals barn and a nearby storehouse. Authorities note the origin is unknown and claim the barn was locked and not in use when the blaze began between six and seven o clock. Dr meals extinguished the flames and secured the scene.
A petition in equity led Judge Hand to appoint receivers for H B Claflin and Company the largest dry goods house in the United States. The firm faces over 25 million in liabilities with at least twenty five banks active. J B Martindale and F A Julard named as receivers. Subsidiaries include J N Adams Co Buffalo McCreary s Pittsburgh Lord and Taylor New York Hengerer Co and others with outlets in Wilkes Barre and Altoona.
The Pennsylvania Railroad opened a two and a half mile grade extension at Horn near Spring Creek after a major contract. Parts have operated since, but full service began this week, with trains limited to ten miles per hour during the transition and expected to return to normal speed soon.
A collision near the interurban line left Hiian Hoppe dead and Elwin Bricker fatally injured along with eleven others hurt. The Lake Shore car jumped the track on a steep grade, with investigators suspecting loss of control and excessive speed as the cause.
A modern wireless time signal system is contracted by Stone and Clary of West Main Street Jewelers. Riggers will install from the Library Theater and jewelers’ building roofs. Time from Arlington, Virginia will be received at noon and 9 pm daily, with minor omissions for comparison. Weather slated partly cloudy tonight and Friday.
A telephoned report from Spring Creek says no trace has yet been found of 14 year old DePainto girl who disappeared Tuesday with a strange Italian man from a village. Parents are frantic and have spread word to intercept the couple. Police in several cities are alerted to watch for the pair as notes indicate they may have moved toward Erie and beyond.
