Benefits From Flood Control Basins Scouted
Rich ard 4 cams reports that nine western Pennsylvania flood control reservoirs authorized in the omnibus flood control bill would only modestly reduce the Pittsburgh flood crest. Experts say the $55 million system would not prevent major floods and would store about 650 billion gallons from 6,000 square miles, releasing gradually to dilute impurities and aid navigation.

Flood control plan targets nine floodway dams in key tributaries
Advocates note that building nine dams in the watershed would protect only part of the area while leaving 13,000 square miles exposed. They say the plan aims to control floods of intermediate severity, which occur often and cost more to manage, whereas small floods, though frequent, cause little damage. The infrequency of major floods keeps average annual losses low.
