The Arkansas River flood in Kansas shows signs of slowing near Great Bend as crest forecasts drop to 13 to 14 feet. Levees reinforced, about 2,500 people asked to evacuate lowlands west and south of Great Bend. Three deaths and an estimated 22 million dollars in damage are reported. Additional notes say Dundee widened flood area upstream and Larned’s levee holds as authorities monitor the gradual relief.

Hollywood AP reports film producer David O. Selznick, 63, died after a heart attack in his lawyer's office. His wife Jennifer Jones, present, rushed him to Mt. Sinai hospital where he passed away. Selznick, famed for Gone With the Wind, paid a high price to secure Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and left a lasting mark on cinema history.
In Colombo Ceylon AP a Roman Catholic priest Father Noel Crust 41 says he is leaving priesthood to wed former beauty queen Manel de Silva 28 Miss Ceylon 1963. He will seek papal release from vows to marry the teacher.
In Crawford County a 16 year old Sparta boy, Jerry Lee Stutzman, was killed when his farm tractor veered off Canadohta Lake road, broke a guard rail, and toppled into a creek bed. The incident was witnessed by neighbor Ralph Davis who alerted Dr. William Earnest, the county coroner, and the tractor reportedly landed on its top pinning the youth beneath it. Stutzman, son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Stutzman, had just been plowing for a neighbor. The accident occurred two miles west of Spartansburg and neighbors helped recover the machine. The boy had attended Wright School briefly and recently moved from Curry to Clymer with his family. Continued on Page Three.
Jamestown records its first 1965 traffic fatality as 7 year old Randy L. Vario, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Vario, dies at WCA Hospital from a fractured skull and internal injuries after being struck by a west bound car driven by Axel Lager. Police say he darted into the street while chasing a ball. accident occurred about 4 PM yesterday.
City police hold two 14 year old Harborcreek Escapees feared to have escaped Harborcreek Training School after a Dairy Queen break in near East Columbia Avenue. A third boy remains missing prompting state police alerts. One suspect is from Johnsonburg and another from Canton Ohio, with another likely Ebensburg area. Dairy Queen owner Roger Moyer chased a suspect and aided officers who found the second youth near Corry Jamestown Plant 3. The trio’s details led Harborcreek and Johnsonburg officials to arrange handoffs back to the school and city authorities to coordinate transfer of the Ohio boy. The boys reportedly admitted to the raid after meals.
W Stuart Helm former two term speaker of the State House was sworn in today as secretary of the commonwealth. The ceremony occurred in Gov Scranton office after the State Senate confirmed him with seven Democrats voting yes. Sen William Lesler of Erie supported the confirmation. Helm has served as assistant to the governor since January 1 of this year.
In Meadville yesterday at 2:30 p.m. three boys were wounded when 14 year old Danny Shea fired his father's 30-30 rifle while four boys rested on the front porch at Robert E Shea's home. Robert McGowan 13 suffered leg cuts and was treated and released. Jerry McGowan 12 sustained upper body cuts. Martin Gowan 5 was also injured.
In Meadville area, 13 year old boy was fatally struck while crossing near a driveway as tractor repair took place nearby. The car, driven by Arthur Hart of Zelienople, struck him after he stepped into the road. the impact threw him 130 feet. Crawford County coroner Dr. Daniel Maloney pronounced him dead.
A 32-year-old Corry man faces a Tuesday hearing on charges of furnishing malt beverages to minors. Police linked the case to a year-old timber theft probe, after a 16-year-old and a 13-year-old provided details. William Smith waived preliminary hearing. bond set at 300 dollars. The offense carries fines from 100 to 500 dollars and possible jail from three months to a year.
Four U.S. Navy planes attacked underground oil storage tanks about 130 miles south of Hanoi with pilots claiming 80 percent destruction. Ground forces clashed with Viet Cong in Thua Thien Province near Da Nang for the third day. An army spokesman reported 54 Communist dead and 15 captured in the search and destroy operation, while Vietnamese forces claimed 50 Reds killed in Binh Son district of Quang Ngai Province.
Gen Mark Clark, who signed the Korea armistice, argues in an exclusive interview that the United States must keep bombing North Vietnam to avoid another Korea.
