Washington AP Johnson signs a $4.7 billion tax cut ending nuisance federal excise taxes on items like jewelry lipstick handbags and suitcases. First stage reduces auto and air conditioner levies retroactive to May 1980 with refunds averaging about $70 on cars. Future cuts planned but selective taxes remain on alcohol cigarettes and gasoline.
Kay Lansing AP reports two young men, York and Latham, executed at Kansas Prison for killing Otto Ziegler. Once boastful teens, they repented at the gallows after four years of legal battles. both donated their eyes to KU Medical Center.
City Council failed to attract bids for installing wider doors at Number 2 Fire Station. Readvertisement planned for July 6. City Park jobs awarded: Otis Hepler of Penn Line Service to cut four trees and trim dead limbs for 200 dollars, Frank Baressi to remove stumps for 115 dollars.
Tons of coal and 13 demolished steel cars litter the area as work crews from Oil City Warren Erie and Corry work both ends of the derailment this afternoon. Officials have not yet determined the cause but marks suggest a car was off the track eight miles west and the crash followed when the train hit a signal switch. Track crews spent the night opening one clear track and damage runs into thousands.
Merle J. Malek, 19, of Columbus RD1, arrested by State Police for larceny of a log truck owned by H. Owens and burglary at John Willis barn. He admitted theft of the truck and two saddles valued at 580 dollars. Damages to the truck were about 1400 dollars. Malek jailed in Warren County awaiting a preliminary hearing. Boxing pioneer Thomas J. Carney, Mahoning County commissioner, dies in Youngstown.
Thousands flee as Arkansas River floods across Kansas from Colorado rains. Larned and Great Bend prepare large-scale evacuations while Dodge City and Garden City deal with shifting flood impacts. Governor Love calls it Colorado's greatest natural disaster and weighs special relief measures.
Two girls were trapped in an Ajax Tron Works elevator during an electrical malfunction as The Journal went to press. An elevator exit halted mid run left them unable to leap to safety while every able male employee on West Washington Street volunteered to assist in lowering them. The women named are Mrs Sandra ee and Miss Linda Tress ler.
In Cuneo Italy three Italian youths face trial on charges of stealing about $20 000 worth of jewelry from the wreckage of King Saud s private jet after it crashed in the Alps in March 1963 An investigating magistrate ruled they had no right to treat the jewels as unclaimed the youths contended they believed ownership had been abandoned
Sparta Merged School District files an appeal in Dauphin County Court to avoid joining the state mandated merger with Corry and Union City. Meadville and Harrisburg attorneys push the case, with potential path to the State Supreme Court if Dauphin rules against them. Roland Putnam says Sparta will pursue the suit to conclusion, highlighting loss of state aid and long history of merging under DPI orders.
U S fighter bombers pushed into North Viet Nam for the deepest strike yet. Eight Thunderchiefs hit Son La barracks 110 miles west of Hanoi, 80 miles from the Chinese border, destroying nine buildings and damaging twenty. A second group attacked the Van Nui Chien ammunition depot 70 miles west northwest of Hanoi. About 60 U S and Viet Namese air force and Navy planes dropped roughly 300 tons of bombs on scattered targets. A pilot bailed out near Da Nang but survived. Two Marines died in a land mine near Da Nang. The death toll for American combatants rose to 419.
President adviser McGeorge Bundy defended the administration stance on Vietnam on television, calling the current policy the best in a dangerous situation and urging continued involvement as needed. Critics led by Hans Morgenthau argued for honor in withdrawal. Six experts debated but offered no new proposals.
At a regular meeting Corry City Council faced two potential precedents. Attorney Frank McKnight sought approval to lay 40 feet of asphalt over brick sidewalks for a new car wash on East Main Street, an action council feared would set a broad precedent. City Engineer David Johnson cited Ordinance 973 requiring brick or equally durable material for repairs and concrete for new walks, while Ordinance 979 bans blacktop walks in the city. Council postponed ruling as discussions continued and McKnight consulted the car wash owners.
