Segregation, Panic Selling Hit Lakeview Neighborhood
In Lakeview near Hempstead N Y white panic selling in an integrated area has spurred a Negro campaign to keep the community from becoming predominantly Negro. Lineal Lynch says the effort aims to preserve the present roughly eight whites per Negro ratio and halt further Negro buying. About 40 white families have offered homes for sale as the Negro population grows. Meanwhile at Fontaine Ferry Park in Louisville, white crowds jeered anti-segregation demonstrators and several were arrested. The ICC invited comments on Kennedy’s bid to end segregation in interstate buses, with hearings set for August. Also, the Supreme Court refused new challenges to school integration in New Orleans and Florida, while nine more Freedom Riders were moved to state prison in Jackson, Mississippi.
