AP reports a convoy to evacuate hundreds from Beirut stalled as fighting continued toward Damascus. Across the region the PLO says Syria and Lebanon’s Tel Vista were hit by heavy shelling near Sidon, 25 miles south of Beirut, as violence loomed near Italian election day and across South Africa.
New York Mayor Abraham Beame reportedly earned 25000 by appearing in a local television commercial for Dry Dock Savings Bank. Philadelphia Orchestra conductor Eugene Ormandy, aged 76, is to be knighted by a British envoy at the British Embassy in Washington on July 1, as announced by the Brith comra genera l Ormandy received the honor from Queen Elizabeth. In Pennsylvania, nearly 300 coal miners at Republic Steel’s Newfield Mine near Penn Hills walked out over a safety dispute after voting to strike, per United Mine Workers Local 6152. Corry police handled nine incidents overnight including a three vehicle crash at North Center and Washington where a driver was charged with drunken driving. By 8 p.m. a three car collision brought responders. vehicles were driven by David A. Grinder, Barry A. Shrout, and a parked car owned by Mr. and Mrs. Treharne. Also noted was a case of alcohol possession by a minor and a rubbish scattering report. At midnight an officer found a man on First Avenue with two full beer bottles.
