About seven hundred soldiers bonus bonds valued at $35,000 were certified for cash return at the local post office through today. Most bonds received Monday are accounted for. Certified bonds will be sent to Pittsburgh with cash return expected by Saturday. Postmaster James P. Sullivan said staff would stay until 8 PM to help veterans complete certification.
In Youngstown Ohio on June 16 1940 steel operations were forecast to rise to about 80 percent capacity by week end, the lowest was 51 percent in June 1939. The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Bessemer plant to remain open and a seventh open hearth furnace will be added as production resumes.

Beaverdam district officials announce that power purchase negotiations for the rural electrification program should close soon with little delay in awarding construction contracts. Over 500 members are enrolled as J H Smith of Meadville leads the program after returning from a Washington conference, with last-minute memberships expected before Friday deadline.
In Harrisburg, Republican senators failed to agree at an afternoon caucus on appointing six members to Governor Warle's proposed relief committee. In Washington, a $40,086 Public Works Administration contract was withheld from Jones Laughlin Steel Co Pittsburgh after the NLRB found unfair trade practices. In Canton China Generalissimo Ghiang KatShel advanced troops to crush the Canton government.
City Council took initial steps toward issuing 20000 in bonds to cover the municipal share of the storm sewer project costs. Mayor Glen Miller and Finance Director A Leo Mulderick were to prepare a statement for the state to obtain the permit, with plans to enact the necessary ordinance and proceed after state approval. The total program exceeds 150000, largely funded by WPA labor, and aims for completion before winter with sections built from Hare Greek to Spring Street and the open ditch near Pennsylvania avenue.

Coroner W C Stroble said the youth’s identity was not yet established and an inquest is planned for early next week.
Four youths aged from 14 to 17 pled guilty to burglary and larceny for stealing four fountain pens and a cigarette lighter from Miss Jane R. Hamilton on March 30. Circuit Judge Doves sentenced them to terms ranging from one year to life, with two youths sent to St Charles School for Boys, one to Pontiac prison, and one to Pontiac or prison.
Memphis socialist worker and a Little Rock minister charged that six well dressed white men beat them near Barle Arkansas during a strike by tenant farmers union members. They said the assault followed their presence while seeking a missing Southern Tenant Farmers Union member reported beaten Tuesday night. Miss Millie Blagden and Rev Claude C Williams described being whipped with a leather strap and forced to leave the district. They returned home separately, with Blagden back in Memphis and Williams in Little Rock.

East Orange New Jersey investigators identified a young man who visited D. McFarian Moore, Edison associate, hours before his murder. Beatrice Moore, Moore’s daughter, described the visitor as courtly and handsome and said Moore had quarreled with him over television work three years earlier. Police pursued leads in Bloomfield and Brooklyn but withheld the suspect’s name.
A devastating blaze swept through a modern picture theatre in Hyderabad City, killing twenty women and children and wounding many others. The fire trapped patrons and caused extensive damage before it was controlled. Police and rescue teams gathered at the scene as inquiries began.
William E Double, alias Pu Jhihe 16, received a life sentence in Western Penitentiary for the slaying of his sister Laura Double Kelly at a lonely Werth Township farm last March 30. The case also involved T Hepler and daughter Mrs Fred Shuss and guest Mrs Emmi Mason of Atlanta, Ga. The hearing coincided with the end of the Consistory meeting in May.
