In Tallahassee the all white jury convicted four white youths of mass rape of a Negro coed but spared the death penalty citing lack of brutality. Foreman A H King said verdict based on law and evidence, not race, and that four Negro defendants would have met the same result. The four await sentencing at Raiford.
Corry area farmer R D Clymer identified a calf remains found Thursday morning in a remote Blue Eye section as his. Paul Gibbons reported the calf’s theft Thursday afternoon and New York State Police say the case is under investigation as rustling.
In Augusta Georgia James Hofer 34 killed his two children and a policeman during a gun battle at his estranged wife’s parents home. Officers Sgt Sumter Lewis and Detective Edgar Beazley confronted Hofer as he crashed through a living room window with an 88 caliber revolver. Hofer was shot by Reynolds and later killed, with the two children Vicky Ann Hofer and Bailey Hofer among the dead. Hofer and his wife had prior disputes including kidnapping charges earlier in Florida.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Anne X. Alpern says utilities profit by high rates and urges a Wednesday gathering of major city officials to discuss rate cuts. Invited are city solicitors from Philadelphia Pittsburgh Scranton and Reading.
Republican legislative leaders in Harrisburg say Gov. Lawrence’s record 1.47 billion dollar budget can be trimmed by around one million and perhaps more. Senate GOP Leader James S. Berger described it as substantial approval to roughly 40 million dollars in reductions. Further meetings will refine the figure and involve all Republicans in a full review. The move dampens hopes for a quick accord on tax proposals to balance the budget. Berger noted any change will hinge on revenue estimates and potential adjustments to existing tax income.
A car driven by Jack D Neely 18 of Titusville failed to negotiate a curve at routes 89 and 77 south of Spartansburg at 1030 last evening and crashed head on into a culvert. Passenger William Howe 18 of Titusville suffered a forehead laceration and was treated. Damages cited at about $200 officials said
The Corry Assembly of God Church board and building committee conduct a groundbreaking yesterday afternoon at the East Main Street site. About 100 church members attended as Rev LeRoy Wiley, pastor, announced construction would start tomorrow. Committee members pictured include Eldred Foush, Earle Ter, Whity Donald Engle, Lyle Bent, Ellie Hamilton, with some absence noted among others.
Louisiana Governor Earl K. Long, confined at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, appeals for habeas corpus to win release while claiming his family orchestrated his confinement. He ranted at reporters about bills on a sales tax and a political primary, saying others wanted to kill his election and loan shark bills. The situation unfolds amid a pressure-filled legislative session and a pending sanity hearing.
In Geneva Allied ministers pressed for a retreat by Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko to break the Berlin deadlock and avert a collapse of the Big Four talks. Western officials sought a compromise to avert a new Soviet time limit and preserve West Berlin occupation while awaiting a possible summit. Five youths from Jamestown area were killed or injured when a car left the highway and plunged over an embankment near Poland. William Gerald Brow, 19, died of a brain injury at WCA Hospital after the crash. James R Marteson, 18, Clyde Cummings, 18, and Garry W Bolinger, 18, were pronounced dead on arrival. Jetty Peters, 14, remained in serious condition. Coroner Samuel T. Bowers ruled the deaths accidental.
In Jolla California a shark killed skin diver Robert Pamperin as several beachgoers watched from about 50 yards away. Tom Lahrer, 90, described seeing the creature, a 12 foot white shark, thrashing and attacking Pamperin who called for help before vanishing underwater. Lahrer surfaced and alerted others but Pamperin was not found.
A locomotive and a freight car derailed on a passenger freight train en route between Jolupa and Ververus. The engineer and fireman died in the crash as the train left the tracks and overturned on a curve.
The Corry High School Alumni Association marked its 85th reunion with a record turnout of 400 attending the dinner and 126 at the entertainment, boosting membership to over 4,000. Ro ward Raligle of class of 1959 received the Virgil G. Curtis Award of $175 for college study at Houghton College. Frank Grice was elected president as officers and trustees were named for the association.
In Mayville Usauvagal County two wrongful death claims totaling $20000 were filed against an entity for the drowning of Rochester residents William L. Rice and Joyce Rice House who were passengers in a car driven by Donald Brtone. The crash occurred March 6 at a French Creek bridge when the southbound car failed a curve and plunged into 13 feet of water.
Corry man failed to negotiate a left curve three and a half miles south of Waterure and rolled his car. No injuries were reported though the vehicle sustained 460 dollars in damage. About seven hours later another single car accident occurred at the same curve. Speed cited as a major factor. curve noted as hazardous by state police.
A single car crash occurred about 3 am three and a half miles south of Wattsburg on Route involving Patrick Gote Erie and passenger Robert Sedelmyer Evie. Both were hospitalized for injuries. Lake County Indiana prosecutor Holovachka resigns after bitter clash with a Senate committee probing links to crime. He denies charges of taking protection money, denounces the investigation as an assault on him and his community. His boss Floyd Vance accepts the resignation and fires three investigators as Gary citizens demand accountability.
Police report a Saturday afternoon collision on Center Street left Dorothy Wallace 23 of West Pi Street and Joseph Schaab 27 of Peoria with both vehicles damaged. Wallace's car sustained about 3200 in damage and Schaab's about 130.
