Pennsylvania Gov. Scranton enters the GOP presidential race as Barry Goldwater builds first ballot support. Goldwater leads with 504 pledged votes, 81 shy of the 655 needed, while Rockefeller and Nixon linger among other contenders. Delegates chosen today in Connecticut New Mexico Idaho and Virginia shape the contest with 64 more delegates on the way. Scranton speaks at the Connecticut convention as party efforts pivot toward halting Goldwater.
In Havana AP reports 73 Americans visiting Cuba defied State Department limits with four black students issuing a statement denouncing the North American racist government and advocating destruction of the U.S. government. Ed Lemansky of New York led the group, with members Ernest Allen, Luke Tripp, Charles Berrard, and Ron Bedford among those identified.

German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard returned home after a White House talk with President Johnson about the Soviet East German treaty. U.S. officials viewed the pact as a symbolic defeat for Ulbricht and urged vigilance while seeking broader Western cooperation and trade. Erhard called the honeymoon over and likened the tie to a marriage built on trust.
Corry and area residents will tour the $100000 Sisters of Mercy convent on West Washington Street tomorrow starting with a 4 p.m. mass at St Thomas the Apostle Church. A tour of the building and a luncheon at St Edward's School gym follow, with Protestant clergy invited. The six nuns teaching at St Edwards occupy space in the new facility, built for ten to allow future expansion. the order has served Corry since 1923, dating to its 1831 founding in Ireland.
In St Augustine Florida on Friday night more than 300 whites marched through a Negro district prompting renewed calls to extend a police ban on night marches. The event followed a prayer gathering by about 250 Black residents at the slave market. Police guarded both sides as leaders denied Ku Klux Klan ties. Florida Attorney General James Kynes urged reconsideration of the existing ban and a court hearing in Jacksonville set for today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was jailed during a sit in and was to testify at the Jacksonville proceedings.
In Genesee County Michigan an angry caller told the sheriff that his four room frame house had vanished from its lot in Grand Blanc Township. Floyd Ray had purchased the home and said he last saw it two weeks ago. The house foundation and septic tank were also missing and the land graded over. Local authorities began investigating the unusual disappearance.
Washington AP reports Gov. William Scranton announced his presidential bid, aiming to steer the Republican Party away from Goldwater conservatism. Nixon faulted Scranton’s television performance, calling him a puppet manipu lated by Eisenhower. Scranton, dubbed the Hamlet of Harrisburg, barnstormed toward delegates, trailing Goldwater 574 to 92 with 655 needed.
Western military sources report indications of a Pathet Lao buildup for a possible attack on Muong Soui in north central Laos. Muong Soui sits on a key highway from Plaine des Jarres, about 110 miles north of Vientiane, where neutralists under General Kong Le are positioned to the south.
