Prison Escapee James Earl Ray Still On the Run in Tennessee Mountains

Federal and state agents joined local authorities in a broad manhunt near Brushy Mountain State Prison after James Earl Ray and five other convicts escaped Friday night. Bloodhounds, a helicopter, and roadblocks covered rugged snake infested terrain as temperatures dropped, with officials noting Ray’s likely aim to split from his group. The pursuit involved FBI, state police, and prison staff plus Governor Carter administration coordination, while residents faced movement restrictions and searches. Ray, already serving a life sentence for Martin Luther King Jr.’s murder, had previously attempted escape and now faces renewed federal scrutiny into possible conspiracy claims.
