AP reports a century old Victorian Hotel and Boarding House fire in Plainfield New Jersey left three dead and at least ten missing. Over 100 guests escaped as investigators probe the second floor blaze near the Fire Department headquarters. Patrolman Robert Miller was hospitalized after saving residents including a 93 year old woman Frances Van Horn listed in good condition. Miller collapsed after rescuing 10 or 12 people. Authorities say the fire started on the second floor and expect more bodies to be found.
President Johnson told reporters after a White House meeting with Federal Reserve Chairman William Martin and top officials that there are no cross currents or conflicts in policy and that moderate gains are expected through 1965. Treasury Secretary Fowler and Commerce Secretary Connor backed Martin’s theme of maintaining dollar soundness. Martin refused Patman’s call to resign, signaling no intent to tighten money now.
New York Mayor Robert F Wagner announced he will not seek a fourth term prompting a scramble for the Democratic nomination. The move could influence national party tactics and pressure on opponents of Republican Rep. John Lindsay in the November election. Harlem Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. urged Franklin D Roosevelt Jr. for the Democratic nod, while Sen. Robert F Kennedy eyed the field as speculation swirled about the party's lineup.
Harold Hicks, 55, of 431 Shady Avenue, was cited for driving under the influence after his car on East Main Street collided head on with Florence Allen, 35, of Snyder Circle. Allen said Hicks was in the wrong lane while traveling west and she east. Hicks appeared unsteady. a physician examined him. A hearing is set for June 15 before Alderman Porter Auer. Damages: Allen $75, Hicks $150.
A light earthquake struck northern Japan today per the Meteoro Agency. No damage or injuries were reported and the event prompted no immediate alerts.
Four county assessment office employees were fired this morning and a fifth resigned effective June 30. Acting on the Tax Board of Assessments and Review recommendation, Commissioners Till and Raymek relieved field assessors Carmen R. Farbo and Louis Sedelmeyer of Erie, who earned 3600 dollars yearly. Clerks Grace Sehlichter 2800 and Vivian Buchanan 3530, both of Erie, were released. Clerk Helen Roycraft Erie resigned end of month. employed since 1926. The board urged hiring more qualified staff as countywide assessment looms. Alex Fedor of Erie was hired at 4500 dollars as a real estate and insurance agent. The board had asked for Frank White of Erie to be hired, but that action was later scratched out. After the meeting, it was rumored Azmek and Administrative Assistant John Wagner deleted White’s name without informing Commissioner Hill. Commissioner Fred Lamberton was in Harrisburg.
John Wickware 23 Harry Wheeler 24 and Frank Wentling 27 entered the Wattsburg Hotel and ate steak dinners then left without paying. They pled guilty to fraud against a hotel keeper, paid restitution and a $9 fine plus costs, and were released at arraignment before Alderman Bachomer.
A two vehicle crash on the Clymer-North Clymer road left Miss Eleanor Schruers with facial lacerations and Delbert Hill jailed on unsafe tires and no log book. both drivers treated and released. Separately, a parade prank went awry as Corry’s old cannon lost a wheel while being wheeled from the city garage, ending up behind the city garage until wheels arrive.
State Senator Martin Silvert of Philadelphia died at University of Pennsylvania Hospital after a long illness. He was 70. His death leaves the Senate with 27 Republicans, 21 Democrats, and one November election contest undecided.
Corry Area High School class of 1965 will hold baccalaureate in the school auditorium Sunday at 8 p.m. The program includes processional by organist Sherry Bennink, hymns, prayers, scripture, sermon by Rev. Ivan Hunsberger, and benediction, with services arranged with the Corry Area Ministerial Association.
President Charles de Gaulle arrived in Bonn for two days of consultations with Chancellor Ludwig Erhard under the French West German treaty of friendship and cooperation. The leaders were not expected to reach a firm agreement on European Community differences.
At Ellington Field near Houston Texas astronauts James McDivitt and Edward White are embraced by family after their historic space flight. McDivitt holds his son Mike and Pat while daughter Ann Lynn watches as White stands nearby with relatives.
Ambassador Taylor told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee there is no reason for a declaration of war in Viet Nam. In Saigon the Dong Xoai battle left heavy American casualties and many civilians dead. The Dong Xoai fight, a C123 crash, and helicopter losses raise U.S. deaths since 1961 to 409, with civilian toll also high and Viet Cong casualties reported heavy.
AP photographer Horst Faas reports Dong Xoai Viet Cong attacked the town, leaving about 150 civilians and many soldiers dead. Government troops fight fierce probes at the west edge while only three of 300 reinforcements remain, with two Americans wounded and survivors wandering the jungle.
Space adventure unfolds as astronaut James McDivitt and Edward White recount four days in space. President Johnson plans to visit the Manned Spacecraft Center to honor the pair and share congratulations with NASA families and staff.
